Poland | H23GK080 High Permeability Grain Oriented Electrical Steel for Tier 1 Distribution Transformer Projects
As the EU Ecodesign 2025 regulations introduce stricter efficiency requirements for distribution transformers, transformer manufacturers are increasingly focusing on core material optimization. For oil-immersed distribution transformers, magnetic induction and core loss performance of grain oriented electrical steel directly influence no-load loss and market compliance. As a result, High Permeability Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (HiB GOES) has become a preferred material for Tier 1 transformer designs.
The customer is a transformer manufacturer in Poland specializing in power equipment and oil-immersed distribution transformers. The project involved the production of Tier 1 energy-efficient transformer cores intended for the European market.
The customer had previously used conventional grain oriented electrical steel, which resulted in relatively high iron loss and limited the finished transformer to Tier 2 efficiency levels. This created concerns regarding compliance with EU Ecodesign 2025 Tier 1 requirements.
The customer was looking for a high permeability electrical steel solution capable of supporting more efficient transformer core designs while maintaining reasonable material costs.
Technical requirements included compliance with IEC 60404-8-8, equivalence to ASTM A876 Grade 23H070, magnetic induction of J800 ≥ 1.88T, core loss of P1.7/50 ≤ 0.90W/kg, insulation coating stability during 800°C stress relief annealing, and EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification.
Based on the customer's operating requirements, we recommended H23GK080 High Permeability Grain Oriented Electrical Steel as an alternative core material. Supplied in 0.23 mm slit coils, the material was selected to support high-efficiency transformer core manufacturing.
In addition to material recommendations, we provided laboratory test data, annealing process guidance, flexible slitting options, and a 5-ton trial order program to facilitate evaluation and reduce implementation risks.

Following material testing and project validation, the customer confirmed that H23GK080 met the requirements for Tier 1 distribution transformer designs. The material demonstrated suitable magnetic performance and compatibility with the customer's core manufacturing and annealing processes.
The availability of flexible slitting widths and trial quantities also helped address sourcing challenges associated with high minimum order quantities and long lead times from larger mills.
