Process Flow of Color Stainless Steel Plate Production via PVD Technology
Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is a high-precision technique for manufacturing color stainless steel plates, valued for its eco-friendliness, wear resistance, and vivid color retention. Below is its core production process:
1. Substrate Preparation
First, select food-grade or industrial-grade stainless steel sheets (e.g., 304, 316L) as substrates. Cut the sheets to the required size using laser or shearing machines. Then, polish the surface with abrasive belts to remove burrs and achieve a smooth finish (mirror, brushed, or matte). Next, perform ultrasonic cleaning in a degreasing solution to eliminate oil, dust, and oxides—critical for ensuring coating adhesion. Finally, dry the sheets with hot air to prevent moisture residue.
2. Vacuum Chamber Setup
Load the cleaned stainless steel sheets onto a rotating fixture inside a PVD vacuum chamber. Seal the chamber and use a vacuum pump to reduce the pressure to 10⁻³–10⁻⁵ Pa. This high-vacuum environment prevents air molecules from reacting with the coating materials, avoiding defects like oxidation or porosity.
3. PVD Coating Deposition
The most common method here is magnetron sputtering or arc ion plating. For magnetron sputtering: Install a metal target (e.g., titanium, chromium, zirconium) opposite the substrates. Apply a high voltage to ionize argon gas in the chamber; the ionized argon atoms bombard the target, ejecting metal atoms (sputtering). These metal atoms travel to the stainless steel surface and form a thin metal layer. To create color, introduce reactive gases (e.g., nitrogen for gold, oxygen for green/blue). The metal atoms react with these gases to form compound coatings (e.g., TiN for gold, Cr₂O₃ for green) with stable colors. Control the coating thickness (usually 0.5–3 μm) by adjusting sputtering time and power—thicker coatings enhance durability but increase costs.
4. Cooling & Post-Treatment
After deposition, turn off the power and let the chamber cool naturally to 50–80°C to avoid thermal stress cracking the coating. Once cooled, open the chamber and remove the coated sheets. Conduct post-treatment: immerse the sheets in a passivation solution to strengthen corrosion resistance; then rinse and dry. Finally, inspect the products for color uniformity (using a colorimeter), coating adhesion (via scratch tests), and surface defects—qualified sheets are ready for packaging.
